Preferred provider organizations, or as they are generally referred to PPO's, offer a wider choice of providers than Health Maintenance Organizations or HMOs.

PPOs have their own network of providers but allow their participants to venture out of the provider network at their discretion and do not require a referral from a primary care physician. However, if you do choose to see a doctor outside of the network you may have to pay a higher amount.

Premiums for a PPO are usually slightly higher than premiums for HMOs but many people choose a PPO because they offer much greater freedom when choosing a doctor.

For most of us, the choice of which doctors are available through a particular health plan is the most important factor in determining which one we choose. So before you decide to enroll in either a PPO or HMO, talk to others who have the plan you are considering, look at the list of physicians the plan has, and be sure that it offers plenty of acceptable choices. Finally, call any doctors you’re interested in and make sure that they’re still members of the plan and open to taking new patients.
